The World Of ACOUSTICThe Evolving World of Acoustics and Vibration TechnologiesIn the 1800s, a hearing aid made of a trumpet-shaped tube that funneled as much sound from the surroundings as possible into the human ear was commercially introduced in Britain. The history of hearing aids began based on this simple structure to make the sound more audible. Two hundred years later, while hearing aids have been downsized to fit in the ear, they incorporate various functions in pursuit of improved audibility. What new functions will future hearing aids offer? What will they look like?Interview made possible by the cooperation of the Museum for the Science of Sound of the Kobayasi Institute of Physical Research.Photo by Yuki AkabaEar trumpetMuseum for the Science of Sound, Kobayasi Institute of Physical Research
