On a family trip to Germany—International trips are not uncommon in Europe.Dominick’s hobby is boating—here we see him on his boat with the NEMO Science Museum in the background. On weekends, he sometimes takes a long drive out in his beloved Citroën.The beautiful city of Amsterdam and its array of canalsWhen Rion rst opened its ofce in Eu-rope in 2002, it chose Amsterdam, the cap-ital of the Netherlands, as its rst European base. Since then, efforts have been made to expand Rion’s reach in the European market with sound and vibration measur-ing instruments. In June 2020, I became an ofcial member of the staff. Before that, I’d been working at the Netherlands ofce of a Japanese corporation that manufactured and sold medical devices and industrial products. So I already felt deep ties to Ja-pan and a fondness for Japan.I’m currently the area manager for Europe. My responsibility is to work closely with distributors throughout Europe to increase awareness of the Rion brand and highlight the superiority of our products so that we can expand our market share. Ev-ery day, I apply my mind and body to vigor-ously promote sales efforts for Rion. In the eyes of a Japanese person, being in charge of all of Europe might seem a little over-whelming. But Europe is basically situated on a single land mass. The Netherlands is located favorably in terms of access to Ger-many, Britain, France, Spain, and many oth-er countries. Even if I have to cross borders, I can easily take a plane or train. It’s very different from traveling abroad from Ja-pan. But Europe is also comprised of many countries, each with distinct characteristics and behavioral patterns, and to succeed in a market like this, it’s essential to adjust your thinking to the uniqueness of each country. I think businesspeople in Europe are naturally endowed with this exibility. As I have the opportunity to communicate with our business associates and customers in various countries and regions on a daily basis, every time I talk to a different person I need to flick a switch within me, which makes it both fun and exciting. Above all, I have no doubt that Rion’s products are functionally superior to all other products on the market in any country in the world. I have no difficulty getting people to un-derstand the superiority of our products if I’m given the chance to fully explain their features. No matter what country people live in, everybody wants a good product. And that’s what makes it possible for me to do my job every day with the condence that I’m making positive contributions to European society.Handling environmental instruments at my ofce, I feel awareness of environmen-tal issues has grown signicantly all around Europe. More and more people are looking for environmentally-conscious products. What can we humans do to solve environ-mental problems? What actions and equip-ment do we need? Those are the questions societies in every European country are asking and trying to nd solutions to. Giv-en all that, I rmly believe the role of Rion’s European ofce will become more signi-cant. My responsibilities are daunting, but I’m also enjoying the challenge. I take great pride in my work.16AmsterdamアムステルダムNetherlandsBelgiumGermanyThe Challenge of Expanding Our Share in the European MarketDominick AalbersEurope Representative Ofce, S&V Mea-sur ing Instrument Sales Department, Environmental Instrument Division.
