The World Of AcousticsIn antiquity, the bronze spouting bowl is said to be a tool used for telling an individual’s daily fortunes. The bowl was filled halfway with water and the handles rubbed with the fortune-teller's hands. The friction would induce sympathetic vibrations in the water. The bowl would resonate with a low humming sound, and fine ripples would appear on the surface of the water. Continuing to rub the handles would generate surface ripples forming regular quadrants. From the edges of each quadrant, the water would begin to bubble up, as if boiling. Eventually, columns of water would spout into the air. The spouting bowl is part of the mystery of sound and vibrations that have fascinated humans from ancient times. From the Museum for the Science of Sound of the Kobayasi Institute of Physical Research.Photo by Yuki AkabaBronze Spouting BowlMuseum for the Science of Sound, Kobayasi Institute of Physical ResearchThe Evolving World of Acoustics and Vibration Technologies
