Distinguished Service Award for FY2020Japan Electric Measuring Instruments Manufacturers’ Association (JEMIMA)Awards!Technological Contribution Award for FY2021Society of Automotive Engineers of Japan, Inc.Yasutaka Nakajima of the R&D Department of the Techni-cal Development Center was awarded the Technological Contribution Award for the scal year 2021 by the Society of Automotive Engineers of Japan, Inc. With over 50,000 individual members and corporate members, including all Japanese automobile manufacturers and numerous suppliers, the Society of Automotive Engineers of Japan is one of the largest academic societies in Japan. The present award recognizes an individual who has made signicant contributions to the activities of the committees under the society's technology board. Nakajima, a member of the Sound Quality Evaluation Technology Committee, helped the activities of the committee and working group (WG) continue online in response to COVID-19, striving to estab-lish smooth communication and information sharing. The award recognizes his extensive contributions to committee activities, including committee management and efforts to guide the direction of various discussions.A Word from the Award Recipiente goal of the Sound Quality Evaluation Technology Committee is to create added value by improving automobile safety and comfort and to promote a more productive automotive society by improving automo-bile sound quality. e committee’s practical approach includes sharing knowledge on sound quality evalua-tion methods, incorporating the results into design activities, and expanding knowledge on developments in related elds. Committee members include people from automobile manufacturers, suppliers, academia, instrument manufacturers, and various other sectors. Working with such a diverse group isn’t just benecial to the committee—it lets me enhance my skills. For me, participating in committee activities means a lot. Being on the committee has provided wonderful opportuni-ties to work not just with customers and engineers who use Rion’s sound and vibration measuring instruments, but with people from many other backgrounds. As seen in the shi to xEV (electried vehicles), along with the movement to decarbonize, and the development of autonomous driving, the automobile industry is on the verge of a revolution. In parallel, the technological levels required in the sound and vibration eld grow daily. Every day, I’m reminded we need to accelerate the pace of technological developments and strengthen human resource development eorts to stay ahead of these changes. On the global stage, how can Japan lead the initiatives in the non-competing areas of the companies? Keeping such questions in my mind, I will continue to contribute to activities that will become standards for the Society of Automotive Engineers of Japan and Japan.Technological Contribution Society of Automotive Engineers Junichi Kawamura of the Quality Assurance Section, Quali-ty Assurance Department of the Environmental Instrument Division was awarded the Distinguished Service Award for the scal year 2020 by JEMIMA. JEMIMA works to advance electric measuring instruments and associated industries through surveys and research on electric measuring instru-ments, promotional activities, and international coopera-tion. Kawamura is a member of the Regulation and Institu-tion Division, in which he served as the chairperson of the Green Product Committee during FY2019 and FY2020. The award recognizes his success in hosting events during the COVID-19 pandemic.A Word from the Award RecipientBefore the COVID-19 pandemic, our committee host-ed paid seminars as part of our eorts to distribute information to associated industries (measuring instrument manufacturers, sensor manufacturers, and manufacturers of products associated with measuring). Aer the COVID-19 pandemic hit, this forced us to create online seminars to replace those previously held in person. e seminar titled “Environment-Related Regulations Surrounding Electric and Electronic Instruments, Spreading from Europe to the World,” which included lay people among its target audience, became JEMIMA’s rst Web seminar.Aer this, I was also involved in the operation of seminars held by other associated organizations. I think it’s too much to say that these activities amount to social contributions, but I do think communicating information through these and other activities helps companies comply with the regulations that govern the chemicals found in their products. I think this award recognizes not necessarily my personal achievements, but the achievements of all those on the committee who helped organize the seminars held by our committee and by the associated organizations. I therefore humbly receive this award on their behalf, as a representative.Currently, in many countries, especially in Europe, various regulations, measures, and activities for environmental conservation are going into eect. e situation surrounding environmental issues is chang-ing at an ever faster pace. To keep up with the changing times, our committee will continue contributing to industries by gathering and communicating informa-tion, promoting lobbying activities in Europe, and strengthening cooperation with other organizations. I feel a renewed spirit of commitment knowing that the committee’s activities will help industries in Japan keep pace with global trends and continue to prosper—knowing that these activities will help energize these industries.Junichi KawamuraYasutaka NakajimaDistinguished Service Award for FY2020Japan Electric Measuring Instruments Manufacturers’ Association (JEMIMA)Junichi Kawamura19
