Receiving this prestigious award is a great honor. e IEC has more than 100 technical committees; I’m a member of the TC 29 committee on electroacous-tics. is committee is responsible for setting international standards for sound level meters, hearing aids, audi-ometers for hearing tests, and standard microphones used to calibrate acoustic devices, based on sound measurements. e committee makes a dra interna-tional standard, which serves as the springboard for discussions and for negotiations with representatives from member states. en, it produces the nal standard, which is used through-out the world. TC 29 includes members from around 20 countries, including me. Deliberations on a standard involves resolving issues and making adjust-ments. It’s not an easy matter to account for the opinions of the engineers and researchers who come from such dier-ing backgrounds, but I welcome the challenge because I can help establish international standards. And the inter-actions with other members introduces me to dierent cultures and ways of thinking. I’ve found it quite stimulating. We hold various social events for the members, which provide great opportu-nities for forming positive relationships, but our work can’t be based on personal relationships alone. Each country has its own concerns with regard to the standard, and any major changes in the standard has the potential to create chaos around the world. at’s why modications to any standard have to be made in small steps, taking social realities into account. e discussions and adjustments require great care and tact.My experiences interacting with experts from foreign countries have renewed my appreciation of Rion and the value it provides. e sta at Rion are all learned in the characteristics of human auditory perception, the eects and consequences of hearing loss, and so on. I don’t think there’s any other company in the world with so many experts on hearing. at’s why I hope our young engineers and sta in the sales department are proud of being part of Rion and continue to grow by interacting with various people outside the company. I believe our eorts will bear fruit in the form of a better society. I hope to continue dedicating myself to gaining new skills and knowledge.”The 1906 Award of the IECDedicated to the International Standardization of Acoustic Devices19IEC/TC 29 working group for hearing aids (Pretoria/South Africa)
