The seemingly random number “94” has a certain significance at the site where sound level meters and acoustic instruments are developed. Sound is a wave (a sound wave) that travels through air. The change in pressure created by sound waves, called sound pressure, is expressed in units of pascals (Pa). The minimum sound pressure audible to the human ear is approximately 20 µPa. The sound pressure level is calculated as a logarithmic value using 20 µPa as the reference pressure (= 0 dB). The unit used here is called the decibel (dB). The sound pressure level corresponding to the unit sound pressure of 1 Pa is 94 dB. This value, 94 dB, is used for calibrations (at a frequency of 1 kHz) of sound calibrators and sound level meters. Rion’s engineers pursue R&D in sound while keeping this number “94” and its counterpart 1 Pa in mind. The Curious Relationship Between Numbers and Rion
