Rion’s H-501 Hearing Aid was certied as Japan’s rst mass-produced hearing instrument and recognized as an important part of Japan’s acoustic heritage.* Rion’s H-501, introduced soon in 1948 after the end of WWII, was the rst mass-produced hearing aid to be developed and marketed in Japan. It featured a built-in vacuum tube called a miniature tube, allowing signicant reduction in size. This device won high recognition for laying the foundationsfor domestic hearing aid development over the course of the subsequent three-quarters of a century.*Acoustic HeritageTo promote understanding of phenomena associated with acoustics and sound among the general public, the Acoustical Society of Japan recognizes phenomena or objects with specic acoustical features that are accessible to ordinary people.[Hearing Aid H-501]Rion’s hearing aid development began in 1947, when a university professor suffering from hearing loss came to us for help. The development team produced a hearing aid prototype by building an ultracompact receiver incorporating a crystal oscillator (proprietary Rion technology) and combining it with a microphone. After many modifications, the first mass-produced hearing aid was completed in 1948. Manufacturing and sales began thereafter. The main unit of the hearing aid measured 20 cm long and 10.5 cm wide, making it as big as a lunch box. Despite its hefty price, the product won high acclaim from those with hearing loss for performance exceeding expectations.19
