Carbon microphoneOwned by the Museum for the Science of Sound, Kobayasi Institute of Physical ResearchDating back to the early 1900s, this microphone uses carbon as its element for converting sound into electrical signals. The main body of the microphone is suspended from the frame using three coil springs to isolate it from vibrations that would otherwise be relayed through the support. The original models of the carbon microphone were invented in the late 1800s by Thomas Edison and Edward Hughes. In these models, a diaphragm was attached to a container packed with carbon powder, and the contact resistance of the carbon powder generated by sound pressure was extracted as an electrical signal. This microphone entered widespread use in society.Courtesy of the Museum for the Science of Sound, Kobayasi Institute of Physical ResearchPhoto by Yuki AkabaThe Evolving World of Acoustics and Vibration TechnologiesThe World Of Acoustics
