Our main task is to promote and sell Rion products throughout China in cooperation with our bases in Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, and Wuhan. We mainly handle environmental measurement instruments as well as medical equipment, and even provide after-sales services. Our clients are mostly in the manufacturing in-dustry, particularly automobile and automobile parts manufacturers—people who are concerned about noise and vibration at their manufacturing facilities. Home appliance manufacturers would be next in line. My job includes fielding questions from customers, listening to specific requests, and sometimes visiting the manufacturing sites to see things firsthand, propose solutions that match their needs, and suggest which Rion products might be suitable.I’m currently thinking about how to remain competitive against inexpensive Chinese prod-ucts. It’s a struggle, but thanks to sales efforts to explain the advantages of Rion products, Rion has established itself as a brand in the Chinese manufacturing industry. One factor is that China and Japan are geographically and culturally close. System and UI designs in both countries are sim-ilar, which makes it easier for the Chinese people to embrace Japanese products. Even though Rion products tend to be more expensive, they’re considered to be more reliable and easier to use than Western competitors. We’re promoting the process of translating our products into Chinese in order to make them even more convenient. We’re working to increase the quantity of Chi-nese versions, not only instruction manuals, but also the software for the measuring instruments themselves.Concerns with the Chinese government’s pol-icies are another issue. Shanghai Rion is currently Members of Shanghai Rion taking part in China Acoustics Industry Innovation and Development Conferenceattempting to develop a foothold in the Chinese environmental monitoring system industry, but the nationalization policy of the Chinese gov-ernment is to prioritize the adoption of domestic products. As a result, we must work harder and be more creative to expand our market share. One of the common questions we get from our customers about Rion products is: “Why are there so many options?” It seems to be typical practice in Japan to provide alternatives for cus-tomizing things. It is more typical in China to pro-vide all conceivable options in the product from the very beginning. On one occasion, I received feedback from a customer who had purchased a hand-held sound level meter with the option of an AC adapter. He said, “The AC adapter should be included in the standard package. The bat-teries run out so quickly.” I agreed with him, so I contacted the head office in Japan. They replied, “Sound level meters are meant to be used outside. If you forget to recharge the batteries, the device becomes unusable. However, with the battery type, batteries can be purchased at any conve-nience store. You’ll understand why we chose batteries as the default option if you actually go to the places to perform the measurement while dragging along a bunch of equipment.” That was an eye-opening explanation!China is currently in the midst of an unprece-dented growth in the electric vehicle (EV) market. The government is actively promoting electric ve-hicles. Several new electric vehicles models have been introduced just in the last year. Charging stations and other EV infrastructure components continue to proliferate. Now it’s possible to drive from Shanghai to Tibet in an electric vehicle. Given these developments, we intend to make energetic efforts in the EV market to step into new fields where high-performance Rion products can play a significant role.Building where Shanghai Rion’s office is located.A view of the Shanghai metropolis from a kayakA photo of scenic mountain climbing taken during one of my days off One can take in diverse vistas of China, like this tea plantation, while mountain climbing.Environmental sound monitor NA-37 sold by Shanghai RionBeijingWuhanGuangzhouShanghaiInterview and article by Miyuki Takahashi16FROM OVERSEAS Here we’ll present reports by Rion staff members and partners living overseas on their work and daily life in foreign countries. How does Rion contribute to people in foreign countries? What’s life like abroad? This section is presented as a series of stories, with each issue presenting the story of one member. The Challenge of Adapting Products and Services Given Differences in Chinese and Japanese MarketsChina [Shanghai]Rion Across the Sea
