Reconstruction is now underway for a new welfare building. The planned two-story welfare building will have a reception room, a cafeteria, an auditorium with a capacity of 600, and exhibition spaces. It’s expected to become a place for active communication and for hosting guests. Discussions are currently underway to determine what specific uses might be most suitable. Construction is slated to be complete around December 2023; actual use will begin around March 2024. As part of the construction of the new welfare building and the demolition of the existing one, a section of the outer perimeter on the west side of the premises will be offered to the city for use as a walking path. A pocket park will be created along the path to provide harmoni-ous views of the Kokubunji Cliff Line and enhance the environment. The new building (welfare building)On December 6, 2022, an on-site tour for employees was organized for the excavation of buried cultural proper-ties on the grounds of the Rion Head Office. The Rion Head Office site is located within a location that contain buried cultural properties of Kokubunji City. Permission from the municipal government is required for any construction that involves digging. The reason for this is to allow archae-ological excavations at the site before construction begins to preserve records of structural remains and protect bur-ied artifacts.Since the third archaeological survey of the Musashi Kokubunji Temple Remains undertaken in 1974, ten sur-veys have been done at Rion. Remains and artifacts from the Paleolithic Age and the Jomon, Nara, and Heian peri-ods have been found here. Excavations of buried cultural properties done before the construction of the new build-ing unearthed more than 3,500 artifacts from the Early to Middle Jomon period.Staff members of the Rion General Affairs Section had suggested that the company share the results of excavations with our employees. Those suggestions led to an on-site tour attended by a total of 115 people. Staff from the Board of Education of Kokubunji City were invited to explain the excavated remains and artifacts, in addition to the history associated with the buried cultural properties. The exhibit also featured stone tools and pottery excavated elsewhere in Kokubunji City, which participants got to hold in their hands.“I was delighted,” said one attendee. “I didn’t expect to be allowed to actually touch the pottery.”Remains discovered[Jomon period]Pits Stone concentrations Small holes Artifacts discoveredStone tools from the Paleolithic Age, pottery and stone tools from the Jomon period, and roof tiles and pottery from the Nara and Heian periods[Nara and Heian periods]Pit-house buildings Channels Pits Small holes 15 1 118 Excavation at the planned site for the new buildingOn-site exhibit of artifactsMaterials unearthed during past arche-ological excavations in Kokubunji City were exhibited.Exterior design of the welfare building18Visit to excavation site giving a close-up look of life in the pastExcavation of buried cultural properties accompanying the construction of the new Rion buildingHosting an on-site tour for employeesRRiioonn’’ss [[AAccttiivviittyy RReeppoorrtt]]
