FROM MY BOOKSHELFPart 120I’d like to introduce a book, or more accurately, the author of this book. I love the works by Shinichi Hoshi, a master of short stories and a science fiction writer. I still have vivid memories of the hours I spent reading his works while I was in college.Hoshi's works brim with vivid por-trayals of aliens, rockets, and futuristic realms. Through the lens of science fic-tion, he masterfully unveils the irony of human greed and destiny, offering a satirical commentary on societal norms. His narratives transcend the confines of traditional science fiction, delving into profound explorations of human nature. This innate understanding of humanity is what appealed to me the most.In high school, for the first time, I experienced the fascination of looking at the stars through a telescope. A friend of mine who belonged to a local astronomy club invited me to one of their nighttime observation outings. Spectacular phe-nomena developing in space impressed me deeply. I think my interest in astron-omy helped make the world created by Hoshi relatable. The more I read his works, the more I feel he never depicts the world outside of Earth or aliens as some-thing horrible. The tools that appear in his stories are curiously primitive. For example, his aliens use projectors, paper and pencils, and other objects familiar to us. They are actually not so alien, which helps readers empathize with his char-acters. Although my interest in science undoubtedly opened a path to Hoshi’s work, themes depicted in his work such as contradiction, absurdity, chaos, and despair, things that we all experience to one degree or another in modern society, attracted, enlightened, and impressed me.Immediately after joining Rion, I took on a challenge. At that time, there was an opportunity for new employees to con-tribute a piece for the company newsletter, which Rion published on a regular basis. I wrote a short story, a tribute to Hoshi’s work, putting every last bit of imagination I had into it. Looking back, I still feel this was a pretty ambitious endeavor. How-ever, this memory also brings to mind my deep admiration for the writer Hoshi Shinichi.Unfortunately, I haven’t taken the time to read Hoshi’s works in the past several years. My bookshelf is filled with many of his masterpieces I’ve read in the past. Now that I’m reminded of how much I admire them, I’m in the mood to immerse myself in that extraordinary world once again.Kiyokatsu IwahashiPresident and CEO. Joined Rion in 1979.
