Its mission was to com-mercialize the products created from the results of research activities by the Kobayasi Institute of Physical Research, a foundation dedicated to the fundamental study of physics and acoustics. Rion began its business with the manufacture of crystal elements for acoustic equipment and applied products, becoming the first manufac-turer of such products in Japan. Thereafter, Kobayasi-riken began manufacturing and selling the first hearing instruments in Japan to address the needs of the hearing-impaired and to improve their communication. In 1960, Kobayasi-riken changed its name to Rion, a name derived from the “Ri” of “Rigaku” (science) and “On” from "Onkyogaku"(acoustics). This year, in 2024, the 80th anniversary of our founding, we started the new year in January with the merging of hearing aids and medical equipment. They are now under a single brand name, RIONET.In addition to the above medical equipment business, Rion provides a wide range of products to various fields, especially those contributing to welfare and the environment, including sound and vibration measuring instruments used in industrial and environmental applications; par-ticle counters essential to cleanliness manage-ment in semiconductor, pharmaceutical, and precision equipment industries; and seismometers for disaster prevention and facility control to minimize damage in the event of earthquakes. Our products have earned wide acclaim from our customers, not just domestically but also internationally.We are proud of our company’s technological capabilities, and its commitment to the pursuit of new challenges. This outlook has made it possible for us to develop numerous products over the course of 80 years. Many of these products became the first of their kind to be released in Japan and the world.
