He has been involved in the develop-ment of measuring and analysis instruments using digital technologies for noise and vibration measurements. He served as Engineering Manager of the S&V Measuring Instrument Department, Executive Officer of the Environmen-tal Instrument Division, and Director of the Technical Development Center be-fore being appointed President and CEO of Rion in April 2022.Some time after graduating from college and starting work, I suddenly became interested in Sakamoto Ryoma and sought out books to find out more about his character. I came across the book Ryoma ga yuku. The book was so engaging that I quickly read all the vol-umes. The novel had a huge impact on me.The main character of the story is Ryoma Sakamoto, a renowned historical figure. The story tells of his life up until his assassination during a turbulent period in Japan. I’m still fascinated by Ryoma’s words and how he lived. One word that represents him would be “freedom.”Ryoma always began his con-sideration about anything from a fresh slate, relying on his free-roaming mind and choosing a path to achieve the best possible outcome. By breaking free of conventional ways of thinking, shedding preconceptions, and eagerly adopting new ideas, Ryoma became a true pioneer of his time. This novel vividly depicts a man whose way of life I deeply admire. Now, looking back on my own life, I can’t quite say that I’ve lived every day with the same freedom of thought and action that Ryoma had. That’s because, as a top manager of a company, I have to be aware at all times of the risks lurking close by. My primary obligation is to protect our employees and affiliated companies from such risks, and to never leave them stranded. But remaining too conservative isn’t the solution; that approach inhibits the development of the company. That’s why I always keep part of my mind open to free and flexible ideas so that I remain on the lookout for new challenges. When-ever I think about such things, Ryoma’s words and actions come to mind and push me forward.I was also influenced by Ryoma’s negotiating skills, as described in this novel. I myself am the type of person who persuades others by appealing to their emotions. Ryoma, on the other hand, often took a rational approach in his negotiations to get the other party to want to say “yes.” For example, Ryoma convinced rivaling clans, Satsuma and Choshu, to form an alliance despite their deep-rooted hostility. He facilitated the alliance by suggesting that Choshu trade its rice for Satsuma’s guns. Ryoma’s ratio-nal approach, objective view of the situa-tion, and negotiating skills have given me a great deal of insight. This book impressed me so deeply that I began to think, if I had a time machine, that I would love to travel back in time to the final years of the Tokugawa Shogunate. If possible, I would like to volunteer as Ryoma’s secretary and learn even more from him.FROM MY BOOKSHELFPart 2In this series, Mr. Iwahashi will introduce a favorite book from his own bookshelf.Books are a source of both knowledge and ideas. What kinds of books does Mr. Iwahashi, our President and CEO, enjoy?Ryoma Ga YukuBy Ryotaro Shiba (Bunshun Bunko)Recommendations from our CEO
