This time, they wanted to organize a field trip so participants could see with their own eyes where Rion products are actually deployed.“The reason for this was we realized that lectured knowledge alone doesn’t really resonate with new employees,” explains Kageyama. “We had to improve that aspect. There’s something called the Sangen Shugi (three actuals principles), which emphasizes the three actuals: the actual site, the actual thing, and the actual situation. It’s important to solve problems by actually observing the actual thing at the actual site and coming to grips with the actual situation, not to take the approach of just sitting at a desk. So, although it was a bit of a long shot, I tried to put together an itinerary for on-site training within the department.”The schedule has been set so that the group visit the airport in the morning and Urayama Dam in the afternoon, traveling between the two locations using public trans-port such as trains and buses. The point of having the group meet and disperse at the destinations is to foster independence and initiative among new employees.“Although we aren’t allowed to enter the airfield,” says Maruyama, “I think it pro-vides a great opportunity to observe what goes on at the airfield and experience how noisy it actually is. The Field Engineering Department makes regular visits to the site to perform maintenance, so it’s also a good way to learn about the kind of work we do on a daily basis.”In the afternoon, they visit Urayama Dam, which impounds up to 58 million cubic meters of water (about 47 times the capacity of the Tokyo Dome) to see a seismometer installed to ensure the safety of the dam. As a side note, Rion’s seismometers are installed at more than 300 dams across Japan.“Dams are equipped with vibration sensors that detect tremors, in accordance with the installation standards of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism,” explains Kageyama. “When the vibration sensors detect tremors, they notify a system that compiles seismic intensity and other data via the seismometers. They’re installed in places that the general public can’t access, but we have been given a special tour for our training.”“This has been the first time we’ve done on-site training,” adds Maruyama. “I felt it was important for our new employees to see what kinds of customers we have at Rion. I’d like to continue providing training programs that allow them to interact with the end users and experience the actual sites.”Yoichi MaruyamaSystem Design Section, Field Engineering Department. He has also participated in the development of acoustic calibration systems and the de-velopment and implementation of AI monitoring systems, including the first of its kind to be developed at RION.Naoki KageyamaSales Section, Field Engineering Depart-ment. Joined the company in 2012. He had been assigned to the sales of S&V measuring instruments before assum-ing his current position. In college, he studied architecture and is now using the knowledge he gained in the field of civil engineering in his previous job to pursue sales activities at sites where seismometers are used. The best way to come to understa nd Rion’s products is to assemble them.
