This device can instantly quantify the volume even of objects with complex shapes. In this artwork, hard metal components are shown with colorful, intermingled structural parts to express the relationship between the machine and measur-ing device. The cable extending from the measuring device resembles a stethoscope placed to attend to the heartbeat of the engine. This work captures the moment at which the invisible world is made visible by sound.Yusuke Kitajima (woodblock artist)Completed graduate course in block printing at Musashino Art University in 2014. His distinctive approach, taking familiar everyday items as subjects, combines the tech-niques of woodblock printing and monotyping to create single unique prints.I first participated in the editorial work for the Rion Technical Journal with Volume 12. The production process for the journal begins with the planning and layout of the magazine content, followed by the interviews, photo shoots, and page design, which proceed in parallel as we get the manuscripts ready by the deadline and, finally, proofread the press-ready file. The process is much more creative than I’d initially imagined. It reminded me of how products are developed. Right now, I’m just doing my best to keep up with the editing flow. Eventually, in future issues, I hope to have the presence of mind to give deeper consideration to our readers. (Uzawa)Welcome to the Rion Technical Journal. The features in this issue include “Potable Water Management and Microbial Particle Counters in Space” and “Versatile Microphones for Measuring Instruments.” We’ll cover these topics from various perspectives, ranging from particle measurement and acoustic measurement and analysis to medical devices related to the ear—all delivered in clear, easy-to-understand language to whet the interest not just of experts, but the general reader. We hope you’ll enjoy reading about the technologies humans use to explore the unknown possibilities of our world, ranging from everyday life to outer space.
