In this issue, we went undercover at the management office that monitors a huge dam around the clock. Here, huge concrete structures that interact with nature and make use of water resources for daily life were in full operation, with Rion’s seismometers playing a major role!Manga: Asako NakagawaUrayama DamArakawa Dam Management OfficeJapan Water AgencyUrayama Dam, located in Chichibu City, Saitama Prefecture, is a concrete grav-ity dam that holds back water with its own weight. The dam body—the main structure responsible for retaining the water—has a volume of about 1.75 mil-lion cubic meters. The dam has multi-ple functions, including flood control, tap water supply, power generation, and conservation of the river environ-ment. It plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety and livelihood of the people living in the Arakawa River basin. The dam site also features the Urayama Dam Disaster Prevention Museum, which is open to the public for free tours. The dam is readily accessed from central Tokyo, with a ride on an express train taking approximately 80 minutes from Ikebukuro Station to Seibu Chichibu Station, followed by a 15-minute bus ride from the stationto the dam.https://www.water.go.jp/kanto/arakawa/urayama/shogen.htmlMultichannel strong motion seismometerSM-29The SM-29, the successor to the SM-27, is a multichannel strong motion seismometer equipped with strong motion measurement functions and continuous vibration waveform-re-cording functions. It detects seismic motion using AND, OR, and two out of three control logic. It also features FTP server functions to collect data via Ethernet.13
