Tuning forkOwing to advances in electronics, tuning forks are rarely used in experiments nowadays. The pictured tuning fork is a variable-pitch model, allowing any desired pitch to be produced by simply moving the screw-mounted weights up or down along the tines. The origins of the tuning fork can be traced back to one invented in 1711 by John Shore, a trumpeter who served the British court. The tuning fork allows pure sounds at specific frequencies to be produced with ease, and, since its invention, has been used for a wide range of purposes: to tune instruments, for hearing tests, for vibration perception tests, and as an experimental tool for demonstrating resonance phenomena in physics classes The tuning fork has played a central role in the history of acoustics. Due to its small size and high portability, ease of handling, durability, and reliability, the tuning fork remains a tool beloved by musicians even to this day.
