13Practical applications of the Origami Impulse Source are spreading worldwideMeasurement Results of Sound Energy Levelsfunctions effectively as a simple sound source for field acoustic measurements, providing adequate precision not only for reverberation time measurements, but also for inter-room sound insula-tion and sound absorption coecient measurements. We presented these re-sults at academic conferences and won the Poster Award from the Acoustical Society of Japan and the Research En-couragement Award from the Institute of Noise Control Engineering of Japan. We also presented at international conferences, including Inter-Noise 2009 (Ottawa) and 2011 (Osaka), and We exhibited the Origami Impulse Source at our booth at Inter-Noise 2023, held at Makuhari Messe in Chiba. Some of the events at the venue were held to introduce Japanese culture, including origami workshops. Our Origami Impulse Source, which incorporates elements of Japanese culture, was aligned with the conference’s general concept and drew an enthusiastic response from visitors from around the world who stopped by our booth. We also received an enthusiastic request from our group company, Norsonic AS, to provide the Origami Impulse Source, which they planned to use as a giveaway to customers. We decided to create promotional materials for distribution. As of March 2026, we have distributed approximately 1,500 Origami Impulse Sources since distribution started in 2024.It is used primarily in Europe and South America. Users appreciate its ease of use, as it requires no special training and lets anyone operate it effortlessly, together with a Development drawing (left) and finished product (right) of the Origami Impulse Source created as a promotional item for RionYuichi YonemotoNew Market R&D Group, R&D Depart-ment, R&D Center. Joined Rion in 2006. He has worked on the design and development of software options for sound level meters, management software, and frequency analysis software. He was assigned to this group in 2024, where he remains today. Despite the ominous challenge posed by the rapid advances in AI technology in recent years, he has high hopes for new possibilities the technology may offer. The graph on the left shows the sound energy levels of three Origami Impulse Sources of different sizes measured by the same operator, while the graph on the right shows the results for balloon bursts. The data points represent the average values obtained from five measurements, while the solid and dashed lines represent the values corresponding to +1 and −1 standard deviation, respectively. The sound energy level of the Origami Impulse Source tends to increase with its size. Balloon bursts exhibit significant variation in energy level in the high-frequency range, whereas the Origami Impulse Source shows only minimal variation across the entire frequency range, demonstrating high reproducibility as a sound source. The Type M Origami Impulse Source was adopted by RION as a promotional item, primarily because of its portability. Compared with balloon bursts, the Type M produces nearly the same sound energy levels in the low-frequency range and slightly higher levels in the mid-frequency range.handheld sound level meter. It’s also been praised for its practicality — it can withstand over 100 measurements — and for being a lightweight sustainable sound source that generates virtually no waste. We’re seeing growing numbers of research papers and conference presentations explicitly citing the Origami Impulse Source as their sound source. We expect it to continue spreading around the world as an invaluable companion for sound level meters. If you happen to hear a loud popping sound overseas, it just might be an Origami Impulse Source being used at a building acoustics mea-surement site. (Yonemoto)received positive reactions from the audience, perhaps mostly because of the curiosity the device provoked.Since anyone can make this sound source simply by folding a sheet of inexpensive paper, it did not occur to us to commercialize it at the time. But we did believe in its potential for widespread use because anyone could make it easily. I’ve heard that some people who became interested in it have started making their own versions of the Origami Impulse Source for their own measurements. It’s gradually gaining recognition as a convenient tool. I’ve even heard it’s being used not just for filed measurements but also as an educational tool in university acoustics courses. In recent years in particular, interest has grown in the acoustic environments of oces and educational facilities. As a result, demand for reverberation time measurements to evaluate the sound absorption performance of interior spaces has also increased. Since spaces that are normally occupied require rapid measurements, I believe the Origami Impulse Source will continue to find wider use. (Toyoda)Type LType MType S+SDBalloon−SD+SD−SD
