The institute also serves as the core organization for implementing Japan's Antarctic research programs. Headquartered in Tachikawa city, Tokyo, it operates observation stations and bases such as the Syowa Station and Dome Fuji Station in Antarctica, as well as those in the Svalbard archipelago, in Greenland, and in Northern Europe, for conducting compre-hensive research on aspects of polar science, including the atmosphere, oceans, ice sheets, geomagnetism, auroras, and ecosystems. The observational data gathered serves as essen-tial fundamental information for assessing and predicting changes in the global environment—such as climate change, greenhouse gases, ice sheet melting—and provides the scientific basis for policy decisions and international frameworks related to climate issues.https://www.nipr.ac.jp/english/The system instantly distinguishes between biological and non-biological particles in wa-ter and counts bacteria, plankton, and other biological particles. It achieves high-sensitivity measurement using deep UV irradiation to ex-cite autofluorescent substances in cells, and detect fluorescence at the single-particle level. The system mainly consists of a deep UV irra-diation device and a viable particle counter (a customized model used at the NIPR), together with a computer, compressing chamber, and flow controller. In addition to oine measure-ments as shown in the setup illustration above, the system supports inline measurements for continuous real-time monitoring.The photo below shows the XL-10BT2 viable particle counter.
