In 2021, he obtained quality certification as a JCSS Calibration Technician.experience in the fields of acoustics and ultrasonics or vibration and acceleration, I really wanted to be involved in JCSS calibration work. That was my main reason for applying for mid-career recruitment at Rion. I joined the company in 2019 and obtained my certification as a JCSS calibration technician in 2021.My first certification for JCSS calibration work concerns sound level meters in the Acoustics and Ultrasonics category. I subsequently obtained JCSS calibration certification on acoustic calibration instruments and measuring microphones in the same category, followed by vibration accelerometers and vibration accelerometer calibration instruments in the Vibration Acceleration category. Currently, only two people at Rion, including myself, are qualified to calibrate all measuring instruments in the JCSS-registered categories. I joined the company because I wanted to be involved in JCSS work, so I have achieved one of my goals. My duties as a JCSS calibration technician taught me that traceability and uncertainty in measurement are extremely important for JCSS calibration. Measurement traceability means measurement results can be traced back to national and international metrology standards through an unbroken chain of comparisons (calibrations). This traceability attests to the reliability of measurement results. Measurement uncertainty is a measure of how much measurement results are likely to vary. Small variations indicate precise measurements and reliable results. Conversely, large variations indicate that the measurement is imprecise and that the reliability of the measurement value is low. As a member of the team working on the uncertainty assessment of measuring instruments, I hope to contribute, in collaboration with public agencies and staff associated with JCSS at Rion, to strengthening measurement traceability as part of our efforts to obtain new JCSS registration for future Rion products.Interview and article by Ryosuke KobayashiThis is the sixth installment in a series of articles showcasing the diverse qualifications of Rion employees. This edition highlights the JCSS Calibration Technician qualification. An employee who holds this certification shares its significance and scope.Part 6 in the series: JCSS Calibration Technician is one of the quality certifications awarded by Rion to employees who complete the required training and education. The in-house technical managers provide approximately one year of training to those who aspire to become JCSS Calibration Technicians. This training includes lectures and hands-on work at facilities in the anechoic room and vibration test room to learn the principles underlying the JSCC calibration for each category. At the end of the training, employees take a written examination, which they have to pass to become a certified JCSS Calibration Technician. The company currently has five JCSS Calibration Technicians.Most of the customers requesting JCSS calibration are from the automotive industry, because they are required to comply with the international standard known as IATF 16949. Compliance with this standard mandates the use of JCSS-calibrated measuring instruments, and accordingly they need the services provided by JCSS calibration operators authorized to perform such calibrations.Because a JCSS calibration certificate guarantees traceability to national standards, there is no need to submit a separate traceability tree. Additionally, uncertainties are explicitly indicated for all calibration results, allowing the reliability of the measured values to be assessed objectively and on a quantitative basis. This makes it much easier to verify measurement accuracy in quality assessments. Based on the MRA (Mutual Recognition Arrangement), Rion’s JCSS calibration is valid internationally as-is in member countries. As certificates issued by an MRA-accredited body, our calibration results are regarded to be highly reliable, even overseas.Previously in a quality assurance section of another company, I was responsible for managing the measuring instruments used on the production floor.To ensure traceability to national metrology standards, we had been outsourcing JCSS calibration for reference instruments. This work gave me an understanding of the JCSS system and I’ve come to appreciate the JCSS calibration as proof of advanced technical capabilities. Back then, I viewed Rion and its Quality Assurance Section — which is accredited under the JCSS categories of Acoustics & Ultrasonics and Vibration & Acceleration — with interest and aspiration.
