This artwork focuses on the intelligence of a pro-gram that meticulously analyzes the information conveyed by such an assembly to detect early signs of failure.The robust presence of powerful machinery contrasts with the logical process of the software quietly working to uncov-er the truth. I wanted to highlight the interplay between the two entities to express our deep confidence in the technol-ogy that ensures “certainty,” something beyond the percep-tion of the human eye, and the watchful eyes that continue to support those working in the front lines of various industries.Yusuke Kitajima (woodblock artist)Completed the graduate course in block printing at Musashino Art University in 2014. His distinctive approach—taking familiar everyday items as subjects—combines the techniques of woodblock printing and monotyping to create a single unique print.This marks my first time co-editing this magazine. I was given the opportunity to join the editorial team of THE PATENT section starting with this issue. By retracing the footsteps of the inventor’s thinking behind every sentence in the patent specification and by learning the concepts behind the patent, deliberations to define technical problems, and processes leading to patent prosecution, I have come to realize that patents aren’t just technical records. They also serve as bridges toward real-world applications of the ideas we come up with. I hope this issue will give our readers a fresh perspective on their own professional work and research.
