Afterward, he devoted himself todevelopment of the VX-14D.The absolute value evaluation of the VX-14D (operating in vibration meter mode) visualizes the state of the machine using color coding based on the specified reference values for vibration. This enables the early detection of abnormalities. Users can use evaluation ref-erence values given in ISO 10816-1 or configure threshold values based on the ISO 20816 series. A four-level color coding system (A: Favorable, B: Acceptable, C: Unsatisfactory, D: Unacceptable) displaying evaluation results based on the magnitude of the vibra-tion lets users instantly comprehend the state of a machine. Since 2011, he has been assigned to providing technical support to the sales staff.The VA-20 is a simple fault diagnosis device that performs fault evaluation based on calculated values independent of a machine’s specifications. The parameters used are the amplitude probability density function for wear faults and the fault spectral density for structural faults, both of which are unaffected by the magnitude of the vibration. The VA-20 offers outstanding ease of use and requires no special training. The user simply presses it against the shaft bearing part to determine whether the operating condition is normal or abnormal. When the product was released onto the market, it gained attention as an innovative device capable of diagnosing wear faults in bearings, gears, and other components.Equipped with an absolute value determination func-tion in addition to the fault diagnosis programThe MASHINDAN was a single-function product dedicated to diagnosis. The VX-14D fault diagnosis program was designed to include an absolute value determination function. Although some of Rion’s vibration meters already incorporate this func-tion, the VX-14D marks the first time the function found its way into a small handheld device.“This function is based on the ISO 10816-1 international standard,” explains Yamashita, “which specifies vibration levels at which abnormalities are judged to have occurred for specific machines with rotating parts, based on their output capacity. The absolute value judgment function evaluates the magnitude of the vibration based on this standard and classifies the evalua-tion result into zones A through D.”The classification system has four zones: A (Favorable), B (Acceptable), C (Unsatisfactory), and D (Unacceptable). The VX-14D is capable of double-checking: making both structural and wear fault diagnoses and absolute value judgments.“The user chooses which function to use,” says Chou. “The absolute value judgment is often preferred for making prelimi-nary assessments. It’s a simple evaluation that bases its judgment solely on the magnitude of the vibration. If the result indicates something might be off, the user should then perform the fault diagnosis to identify the source of the problem. And if the risk is deemed to be high, the user should run a detailed analysis using the advanced analytical capabilities of the VA-14.”In addition to ISO 10816-1, the VA-14 supports evaluation based on the ISO 20816 series, a set of guidelines for vibration assessments that also covers the servo and linear drives found in modern machinery. This feature lets users set custom thresholds for evaluation.VA-20 Fault Diagnosis DeviceEvaluation based on ISO 10816-1Just like the MASHINDAN, the VX-14D can perform a rapid diagnosis to detect early signs of machine failure. In large facto-ries with tens of thousands of machines, the ability to carry out a quick diagnosis is a significant benefit.“Just as with the human body,” explains Yamashita, “it’s important to detect and treat issues in the early stages. Another important point is to keep machines operating at their best for as long as possible, ideally with minimal human intervention. Even if the diagnosis result shows an elevated value that may indicate an abnormality, you don’t always need to repair the machine right away. Thresholds for the danger zone vary for each machine. That’s why the VX-14D is useful in planning maintenance and upgrades to maximize the life and eciency of equipment.”The approach to product development was based on the cus-tomer perspective: to create a product that could visualize the progression of equipment failures so that customers could for-mulate optimal maintenance plans. Having succeeded in their endeavor, Yamashita, Chou, and Umayahara all share a renewed sense of pride.Umayahara explains, “At first I believed the hurdles to adapting the MASHINDAN technology would be extremely high. At the same time, I was confident my development team would over-come them. Now that we’ve succeeded in producing something far beyond my expectations, I’m determined to fulfill my respon-sibility as a member of the sales team to make sure this product reaches a wide range of customers. Thanks to our highly capable development team, now we can deliver a technology that had remained dormant inside our company for a long time to our customers as part of a new product. That alone makes me happi-er than anything else. And I’m delighted we got to demonstrate once again the high technical expertise characteristic of Rion.
